Eight years and going strong, according to creator Ron Pitre. Backpacks For The Homeless is underway across the greater Ottawa area. Residents are being asked to pick up a backpack at various locations across the region, and fill the backpacks with essentials for our area’s homeless.
As in previous years, the goal is to fill 1500 backpacks, which will be distributed to the homeless days before Christmas.
This annual initiative has two parts, filling, and distributing the backpacks, but also purchasing the backpacks, which has a growing cost for this not for profit organization. “Even though we receive a generation discount from our supplier, there is still a cost which has seen an increase over the years,” said Ron Pitre. Donations to offset the cost of the backpacks, including the cost of purchasing Tim Horton’s gift cards which are included in the packs are appreciated. If you would like to make a monetary donation, you can contact Pitre via e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org
At the moment, the push is on, for those interested, to pick up the backpacks, fill them, and return them as the deadline is fast approaching.
“This is a perfect project for businesses, schools, churches, and families to give back.” said Pitre. He also wants to thank the area businesses that are acting as a pick up and drop off location. “Backpacks For The Homeless wouldn’t be a success every year without the community’s generosity, especially local businesses, many who has been extremely generous with cash donations. I also want to thank my volunteer team. Their passion, drive, and the fact that they give up countless hours for this cause, touches me every year. And Jewel Radio has always come through for us. I truly appreciate it.” said Ron Pitre.
