Canada’s Audio-Visual Treasures May Be Put In Underground Vault

An old Norad bunker near North Bay is being considered as a possible underground vault for some of Canada’s audio-visual treasures.

The Canadian Broadcast Museum Foundation is hoping to turn the out-of-use underground complex into a secure repository for millions of videos, films, photos, scripts and other items.

The foundation’s executive director Kealy Wilkinson says it’s imperative that the original items are preserved, even after they are copied into digital formats. She says throwing decades-old tapes and films into the dumpster would be like tossing out Emily Carr paintings or early settler maps.
