The provincial government says it will cancel a scheduled increase in a beer tax that was set to kick in next month. The Progressive Conservatives say the three-cent-per-litre increase was planned by the previous Liberal regime and will be scrapped. The government could not immediately say how much tax revenue it will forgo by halting the tax increase, but beer and wine taxes brought in revenues of roughly 589-million dollars in 2016-17. The Tories are reviewing the province’s approach to beer and wine sales, including the possible expansion of sales into corner and big box stores.

The provincial government plans to rebuild the aging radio network first responders rely on during emergencies. Premier Doug Ford says the Public Safety Radio Network is prone to daily outages and must be modernized. The network covers 750-thousand square kilometres across the province, including areas in the north where cellphone service is not available. Ford would not say how much the rebuild will cost taxpayers, saying those details will be released once a competitive bidding process is complete.

A 17-year-old North Glengarry Teen has been identified as the victim of a fatal head-on crash on Highway 401 near Morrisburg Wednesday morning. Joshua Seguin was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The OPP says that “for reasons under investigation” an eastbound passenger car entered the westbound lanes and collided with a westbound transport. The trucker was unhurt.

OPP has recently issued an alert for a so-called pumpkin thief in Embrun. Last Suday night a woman, a passenger in a  recent white two-door car, reportedly got out and took pumpkins on Ménard Road. Shortly after midnight the next day , the same suspect was spotted stealing pumpkins from another residence in the Lapointe Boulevard area. The suspect is described as a Caucasian woman, 25 to 35 years old, about five feet and six inches tall, with blonde hair mid-length and wearing glasses. Residents with information regarding the thefts are asked to contact police.
