Residents near the Irving Oil refinery in Saint John, New Brunswick have been warned of possible “flare-ups” as the facility restabilizes after yesterday morning’s massive explosion. The city posted on social media last night that while the “shelter in place” order has been lifted, emergency management officials remain on site to monitor the Irving Oil refinery as it came back online. An explosion at the facility yesterday rocked a residential area sending flames and black smoke into the sky, but causing only minor injuries to four people. Irving Oil says there had been some sort of malfunction in the refinery’s diesel treating unit, where sulphur is removed from diesel fuel.

The work on the sewer and water line upgrade project in the village centre of Vankleek Hill is continuing; however not without troubles. The public works office is fielding complaints about transport truck drivers ignoring the detour signs.. The township has asked the OPP to provide “paid duty officers” at the excavation area to ticket motorists ignoring the detour signs. James McMahon, Champlain Township public works director says this is budgeted for under the project’s contingency fund so it will not be an added expense to the township. The Main Street intersection portion of the mainline replacement project should be done before mid-October. After the repaving work is done the public works department will resume the controlled one-lane traffic setup for Highway 34 through the village centre until the rest of the mainline upgrade work is finished later in November.
