In The News For August 7, 2018

Firefighters in Ontario spent their long weekend battling flames on numerous fire lines in the northeastern and northwestern regions of the province. As of last night, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources counts 122 active fires, with 25 listed as out of control. The ministry says there have been 918 forest fires so far this year compared to 354 in 2017.

 

A structure fire caused ten people to be evacuated from buildings on Regent Street in Hawkesbury around 3 o’clock Monday morning.  L’Orignal Fire Department was called in to assist and later also the Vankleek Hill Fire Department. Hydro crews were called in when a hydro pole also caught on Boudreau Rd. in Bourget, last night. No injuries were reported in either fire.

 

Hydro One reported more than 16,000 outages and more than 34,000 Hydro Quebec customers were without electricity last night after thunderstorms. Most of the Quebec outages were in Montreal and the suburbs south of the city. Winds reaching speeds of 82 kilometres per hour were reported in the area and some trees were uprooted south of Montreal.

 

A man from Nepean was killed by a fallen tree at the Lac Philippe campsite in Gatineau Park over the weekend. The 39-year-old died instantly when a tree fell onto the tent he was in at the campsite in La Peche. Three other people inside the tent an adult man and two children, aged four and five  were uninjured. The tree did strike another nearby tent, slightly injuring a woman inside.

 

MoneySense magazine released its Best Places to Live in Canada 2018 last week with Oakville  number one on the list followed by Ottawa. Russell Township, up from number 21 last year to number 3. La Nation saw a major jump from 123 last year to number nine in 2018. Clarence-Rockland remained steady at number 30, up one spot from 2017. Hawkesbury jumped to number 78 from 311 last year. The magazine also said,  Russell and Limoges are two of the fastest growing communities within Prescott-Russell.
