Canada’s diplomatic tensions keep growing with Saudi Arabia in the ongoing fallout from Ottawa’s tweet on the weekend, criticizing the kingdom for detaining female bloggers and activists. Saudi Arabia has recalled its ambassador, ordered ours to leave, and has frozen new trade between our two countries, casting uncertainty over a multi-billion-dollar contract to build and send light-armoured vehicles to Saudi security forces. Yesterday, Saudi students in Canadian universities were also told their scholarships have been suspended, and that they have four weeks to pack up their bags and leave Canada.

 

The Coalition of Ontario Psychiatrists is calling on the province to offer incentives to psychiatrists. The group says a shortage of psychiatrists is contributing to a growing mental health crisis across Ontario. It says the shortage is linked to the large number of psychiatrists nearing retirement age, combined with a lack of a younger cohort to succeed them. A report released today by the coalition also urges the government to increase the number of psychiatry residency spots available to medical students..

 

 

Provincial police say the body of an 18-year-old Ottawa woman who disappeared while swimming has been recovered. Police say the woman — who was swimming with family members — failed to surface on Monday afternoon at Logos Land Resort near Cobden. An O-P-P underwater search and recovery unit found Maria Paned’s body yesterday afternoon. Investigators say an autopsy will be conducted, but foul play is not suspected.

 

The Prescott and Russell Entrepreneurship Centre received great news from the Ministry of Economic Development and Growth. As part of the Summer Company program, they received $18,000 to help six young entrepreneurs located in the Prescott and Russell region. Also, it solidified two partnerships which each contributed $3,000 to help two more students making a total of $24,000 in grants to eight young entrepreneurs for business start-ups.
