The mayors of Prescott-Russell are concerned about the impact that the legalization of marijuana next summer will have on maintaining law and order and the value of properties in their communities. The provincial plan is to manage legal marijuana sales, much the same as liquor sales, through government-approved cannabis retail stores. In January, the Champlain Township Council discussed the impact of the legalization of marijuana on the cost of municipal policing. The Council of the United Counties of Prescott-Russell has approved a resolution requiring the provincial and federal governments put in place a marijuana sales tax sharing program, similar to the gas tax sharing program.
The Ottawa Police Service would like to advise that Franktown Road is closed in both directions west of Dwyer Hill Road pending the completion of a serious motor vehicle collision. Emergency crews were called to 8472 Franktown Road around 1:30 this morning. Two men in their 20’s were in a vehicle that struck a hydro pole and overturned in a ditch. One man was pronounced dead, but the other man was not injured .Ottawa police are investigating.
January’s jobs numbers are due out today, and they should provide an indication as to whether the country’s job market is still blazing. December’s Statistics Canada report showed the national unemployment rate fell to 5.7 per cent — its lowest level in more than 40 years. The economy generated 78-thousand-600 net new positions in December, including almost 24-thousand full-time jobs.
