A SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT is in effect for our area– Freezing rain is expected for parts of eastern Ontario this afternoon. Areas around the Quebec border and Ottawa Valley may get it worse before it turns to rain. Much colder air moves in to change everything over to snow on Saturday.
Ottawa police are investigating the city’s first homicide of the year. A male was shot and killed last night at about 8:30 p-m on Paul Anka Drive. No details about the victim or possible suspects have yet been released. Anyone with information is asked to contact the major crime unit.
A family of five has been left homeless in Osgoode. Yesterday morning Ottawa Fire crews were called to a basement fire in a home on Stagecoach Road. Officials say the fire quickly spread to the main floor and garage of the home. Everyone inside the home got out in time and no one suffered serious injuries. One woman in her 60s was treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation. Two dogs, one cat and a bunny were killed in the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Southern California is dealing with another disaster. By last night, At least 13 people have been killed and dozens of homes were swept away as downpours sent mud and boulders roaring down hills already stripped of vegetation by a gigantic wildfire last month in Santa Barbara County. Helicopters plucked more than 50 people from rooftops and dozens more were rescued on the ground. Twenty people are hospitalized, and a number of others are missing.
