In The News For Clarence Rockland — September 11, 2017

The threat from hurricane Irma is not over. The monster storm zeroed in on the Tampa Bay region overnight, with Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee also bracing for some impact. Now a Category 1 storm, the U-S National Hurricane Center says further weakening is possible. The hurricane centre says the storm still poses a danger with storm surge, wind and heavy rains.


The federal government has set the wheels in motion on helping those in the Caribbean who have been affected by hurricane Irma. The government is sending a team to the region to determine what Canada could provide in terms of humanitarian aid. One option for the government is to use its Disaster Assistance Response Team, which can rapidly deploy anywhere in the world.



Ottawa Police are investigating after they say shots were fired in the ByWard Market area early today on Murray St. at about 2:30 this morning. There were no victims or suspects in the area when they arrived. Police found shell casings and are asking anyone with information to come forward.



A 27-year-old skydiver is dead after his parachute failed to properly deploy following a solo jump in Gatineau. The victim’s name has not been released but witnesses said he was an experienced skydiver with more than 300 jumps under his belt.
