Debate on a major labour reform bill is set to start today in Ontario’s legislature. The bill would hike the minimum wage to 15 dollars an hour in 2019, provide equal pay for part-time workers, increase vacation entitlements and expand personal emergency leave. The government has said it will unveil a package of offsets this fall to help businesses cope with increased costs.
Friends and neighbours of an Ottawa farm family have launched a fundraising campaign to try to help them recover from a devastating fire. The blaze at the Black Rapids Farm destroyed three barns and killed 80 cattle. Neighbours say the Ruiter family has run the farm since 1962 on land leased from the National Capital Commission. They’ve started a Go-Fund-Me page with a fundraising goal of 150-thousand dollars.
Quebec’s special investigations unit has been called in to investigate a hanging in the police lock up in Wakefield. About 9:30 yesterday morning, a 29-year-old man was found hanging from a blanket in his cell, and was rushed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Seven investigators are working the case.
The O-P-P says a 61-year-old Renfrew man is facing several charges after security video showed a suspect stealing women’s underwear from a home in Whitewater Region Township. Doug Burwell is charged with break and enter with intent to commit an in-die-ctable offence, theft under five-thousand dollars and possession of stolen property. He was released from custody with conditions and is to appear in court on October 11th. Police say numerous women’s undergarments were seized during the investigation and they would like to speak to anyone who may have been a victim of theft.
