Pierre Leroux  was  defeated as the Liberal candidate for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell against one of his fellow members on township council, Amanda Simard, the Progressive Conservative candidate. Ontario has given the province’s Progressive Conservative party a majority, ousting the rival Liberals after 15 years in power. P-C leader Doug Ford, the brother of Toronto’s infamous former Mayor Rob Ford, will take over as premier from Liberal leader Kathleen Wynne. Wynne held on to her Toronto-based seat, but her party’s presence in the legislature all but vanished, leading to the party losing its official status and Wynne to announce that she’s stepping down as party leader. The New Democrats had a decent showing and have moved into the position of official opposition.

A third passenger who was injured in a bus crash in eastern Ontario on Monday has died. Provincial police identified the passenger late last night as 60-year-old Chinese woman Weiping Lu. Two other Chinese tourists — a woman and a man — died from their injuries earlier in the week, when a tour bus carrying 37 people crashed into a rock cut by the side of Highway 4-0-1 near Prescott. The O-P-P says two other people who suffered life-threatening injuries are now in stable condition.

Fire officials in Ottawa say a house fire in the city’s south end was caused by a recently purchased hoverboard. Firefighters called to a home yesterday found people huddled on abalcony trying to escape the smoke. Crews put the fire out and no injuries were reported. Ottawa Fire Services say family members told firefighters that a hoverboard they had just purchased burst into flames when they plugged it in to charge it. Hoverboards — or “self-balancing scooters” — have been the subject of numerous recalls and have been blamed for other fires and injuries.

On the evening before the G-7 summit, being held in Quebec, U-S President Donald Trump set the stage for a more combative get together of world leaders. The American leader targeted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Twitter over ongoing trade differences between the two countries, accusing the P-M of being “indignant.” Trump has recently alienated most other nation members with his trade tariffs, prompting the French President to tweet that the summit may exclude the U-S from it’s joint post meeting statement.
