A new report on Ottawa police says time lost due to injuries while on duty ballooned in 2016. The report says the length of time officers were away from work last year jumped by 71 per cent compared to 2015 — to an average of 294 hours or about 37 eight-hour days. That saw the cost to the department jump from 2.6-million dollars in 2015 to 3.3-million last year. Almost four out of 10 injuries suffered by officers resulted from them pursuing, arresting or otherwise interacting with what the service calls “non-compliant individuals.
