The Vegetable That Will Help Avoid A St. Patrick’s Day Hangover

Millions will be enjoying the odd beverage of choice to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day today and tonight, all in moderation to avoid that dreaded hangover.  They say to drink plenty of water, and what you eat before, during, and after can have an effect.  If you are planning something tonight, you might consider a stop to the grocery store to pick up some:

It seems that eating asparagus prevents hangovers.  Researchers at the Institute of Medical Science analyzed asparagus’ biochemical effects on human and rat liver cells.

Researcher B.Y. Kim says, “The amino acid and mineral contents were found to be much higher in the leaves than the shoots. Chronic alcohol use causes oxidative stress on the liver as well as unpleasant physical effects associated with a hangover. Cellular toxicities were significantly alleviated in response to treatment with the extracts of asparagus leaves and shoots. These results provide evidence of how the biological functions of asparagus can help alleviate alcohol hangover and protect liver cells.”
